En Viena, en mayo 2006, durante el encuentro Enlazando Alternativas 2, no solamente se cuestionaran los acuerdos entre la UE y América Latina, las políticas de desarrollo y el militarismo en ambos continentes, sino que también se llevó a cabo un Tribunal de los Pueblos para enjuiciar el funcionamiento del sistema de poder de las transnacionales europeas, tanto en América Latina como en la propia UE.

El Tribunal de los Pueblos a las Transnacionales trajo resultados muy positivos, no sólo por su impacto mediático en la contra cumbre, si no también, y especialmente, por lo que ha dejado para los y las activistas que militamos para frenar los abusos de las corporaciones internacionales y su poder. Fue posible mostrar, dar visibilidad, a lo que se denomina el carácter "sistémico" del poder de las transnacionales. Los más de treinta casos presentados pudieron demostrar todas las áreas en las que operan, la diversidad de sectores de nuestras sociedades afectadas por su accionar, la forma en que lo hacen y los mecanismos institucionales que gobiernos nacionales y acuerdos y organizaciones internacionales han montado para facilitar su expansión a nivel global, y en particular en nuestro continente.

Así, después de Viena un conjunto grande de organizaciones sigue interesado en discutir estrategias y acciones conjuntas cuanto al tema. Sin duda el carácter sistémico de las transnacionales es parte del avance global del capitalismo y consiste, por tanto, en un desafío que requiere un nivel de debate profundo y serio en los espacios sociales previamente construidos.

In Viena, in May 2006, during Linking Alternatives II, not only were questioned the agreements between the EU and Latin America, the development policies and the militarism in both continents. A Tribunal of Peoples was also held to judge the action of the system of power of the European TNC’s, in Latin America or in the EU itself.

The Tribunal of Peoples on the TNC’s brought very positive results, not only for the mediatic impact on the other summit, but also, and especially, for what it has brought to us activists that fight to stop the abuses and the power of the international corporations. It was posible to demonstrate and expose the so called “sistemic” character of the power of the transnational corporations. All the cases presented (more than thirty) could show all the areas in which TNC’s operate, the way they do it, and the many sectors affected in our societies, besides the institutional mechanisms that national governments, agreements and international organizations have set up to facilitate their expansion in a global level, and especially in our continent.

This way, after Viena a large body of organizations keep interested in discussing strategies and joint actions related to this subject. Undoubtely, the sistemic character of the TNCs is part of the advance of capitalism and so it is in a challenge that requires a serious and deep level of debates in the social spaces that are previously built.
