Ref. Es un acierto no aprobar el TLC.

El Polo Democrático Alternativo, partido político colombiano, es partidario de las relaciones económicas, políticas y culturales de nuestra nación con todos los países del mundo incluyendo, desde luego, a los Estados Unidos, porque ellas contribuyen al bienestar de los pueblos, en la medida en que se diseñen con el objetivo de lograr beneficios recíprocos entre las partes.

El problema fundamental del Tratado de Libre Comercio (TLC) entre Estados Unidos y Colombia se centra en que queda reducido a un acuerdo entre ganadores y perdedores. Infortunadamente, los colombianos asumimos este último papel, pues perdemos cualquier posibilidad de desarrollo próspero. Igualmente, aciertan quienes también dicen que con él ganan unos pocos en Estados Unidos, pero no el pueblo estadounidense. Por ejemplo, la ruina del agro colombiano que provoca dicho Tratado estimulará la siembra de coca en Colombia y el narcotráfico en las calles de las ciudades norteamericanas.

De otra parte, los hechos demuestran que el gobierno del Presidente Álvaro Uribe Vélez no le ha dado respuesta satisfactoria a la violencia que azota a los colombianos y, en especial, a los dirigentes sindicales y a los activistas de los derechos humanos, como lo demuestran las alarmantes cifras del último mes, en el cual han sido asesinados cuatro dirigentes sindicales. Así lo señalan recientes estudios del Departamento de Estado y las Naciones Unidas. Inclusive, la Oficina del Alto Comisionado de Naciones Unidas para los Derechos Humanos en Colombia acaba de emitir un comunicado en el que expresa su “profunda preocupación por las amenazas de muerte de las que han sido víctimas líderes de las organizaciones sociales y de derechos humanos que participaron activamente en la reciente marcha del 6 de marzo” en memoria de las víctimas de todas las violencias.

Contribuye positivamente, entonces, el Partido Demócrata al mejoramiento de las relaciones entre los dos pueblos al no aprobar el TLC entre Estados Unidos y Colombia.

RE: Voting against the FTA is the right decision.

The /Polo Democrático Alternativo/ (Democratic Alternative Pole, a Colombian political party), supports our nation's economic, political and cultural relations with all the countries of the world including, certainly, the United States, because these relations contribute to the well-being of the people, to the extent that they are designed to meet the goal of achieving reciprocal benefits among the two parties.

The fundamental problem with the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States and Colombia is that it has been reduced to an agreement between winners and losers. Unfortunately, we Colombians are the losers, because we lose any possibility of achieving prosperous development. Likewise, many have also indicated correctly that this FTA benefits only a select minority in the United States, not the general population. For example, the destruction of Colombian agriculture caused by the FTA will stimulate the planting of coca in Colombia and more drug dealing in the streets of American cities.

In addition, the record shows that the government of President Alvaro Uribe Velez has not responded adequately to the violence that plagues Colombians and particularly union leaders and human rights activists, as is demonstrated by the alarming figures from last month, in which four union leaders were murdered. Recent studies conducted by the State Department and the United Nations reflect this current situation. In fact the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Colombia has recently released a statement in which they express "deep concern over the death threats directed at leaders of social and human rights organizations who actively participated in the recent March 6 demonstration" in memory of the victims of all the violence in Colombia.

Therefore, the Democratic Party can make a positive contribution to improving relations between the people of our two countries by voting against the FTA between the United States and Colombia.
